Six Things To Consider When Buying Tire Pumps

Tire pumps come in various types. There are the frame pumps, mini pumps, CO2 inflaters and floor pumps. These pumps have their own advantages and disadvantages so before you go buy one, here are some things you should consider.

1. Type of bike and pressure. Tires for different types of bikes will certainly require a particular amount of pressure. The pressure unit is otherwise known as psi or pounds per square inch.

If your tire needs more pressure or has higher psi needs, then it is only understandable that you will surely need a stronger tire pump. If you are using a road bike, expect the tire pressure to require about 100 psi thus needing a stronger tire pump.

On the other hand, if you are using a mountain bike, the tire pressure is lesser as compared to the tires used by road bikes. Mountain bike tires only need around 30-60 psi.

The psi output will vary for each tire pump type, so if you are going to ride cross country, then you will have to refill your tires more often. For sure, you will need a tire pump with a bigger psi output.

2. Mount. If you choose to bring along a pump, make sure that it fits perfectly inside the mount. In addition, also consider its location especially if you already have a water bottle cage attached to the frame. Other than that, the mount should fit perfectly into the bike frame. If you are unsure, then consider buying an adjustable mount.

3. Speed. If you are into bicycle racing, then you will certainly need a tire pump that is able to refill your tires at record speed. Pump speed is essential because this will not only save you time, it will also keep you from getting exhausted especially if you are using handheld pumps or floor pumps.

4. Size. The different types of pumps also come in different sizes. If you want to take it along on a trip, then you might want to buy a small sized tire pump. But if you want a heavy duty tire pump that can last for a long time, you might want to buy a floor pump which is not only tougher and sturdier; it is also bigger than the other types of pumps.

5. Weight. If you are into racing, then weight is of importance. Remember that the more your bike weighs the slower you get. So in that case, you might want a lightweight handheld pump that is able to pump fast but doesn't add weight. Remember that the mounting you use to contain your tire pump also adds weight.

6. Lifespan. If you want a pump that lasts long then invest on floor and frame pumps. These types are sturdier. With these types you won't have to keep on buying a new tire pump every time you go cycling. Mini pumps may be easy to bring along but it can easily fall apart especially with constant use.
