Five Cycling Accessories You Absolutely Need

Planning your next bike ride up the mountain? Going out for a night trip on the highway? Whatever you have planned with your bike, you have to make sure that you are riding with all the required accessories for all sorts of situations. You just never know when you will land in some trouble while you are out enjoying the wind on your face. Here are some accessories that you just absolutely need to have on you or on your bike when you go out for the day.

• Helmet – For safety, you should always have a bike helmet. Get something light and not something that will cover your head entirely like a motorbike helmet. This way, you can still protect your head and hear everything around you while you are cycling. In case you get in an accident, a helmet will probably be the only thing that saves your cranium from a possible fatal experience.

• Elbow & Knee Pads – Further safety requirements include protection for your joints. A lot of people seem to leave these accessories at home because they feel it makes them look silly. They also feel it's too much to bring just for a bike ride. However, imagine the kind of damage done on your knees and elbows if you are not wearing any pads to protect them. The next time you go out, even if it's just down the block, make sure you are all geared up to the nine in safety gear.

• Tire Patches – The number one problem with a bicycle is a flat tire. Flat tires can ruin all sorts of fun that you can get from cycling. Of course, you can't always carry a spare tire with you. In fact, when was the last time you carried a spare when you went out cycling? A quick and temporary solution to a flat tire is to bring some tire patches and tire glue. You can quickly cover the holes in your tire and head home slowly or to a place where you can buy a new tire or have your tire repaired permanently.

• Tire Pump – Of course, once you have a flat and patch it up, you will need to put air into the tire. Most bikers have a pump strapped to the frame of the bike just in case they need to pump up the wheels. Although this is common, a lot of people find themselves without a pump when they need it most. Double-check that you have a pump for your bike.

• Reflectors – Think that you might be cycling around at night a lot? Then make sure you doll your bike up with reflective stickers and reflector lights on the seat. You might want to mount a reflector on the front of the handlebars as well. This way, any cars coming your way will see that you are on the road and stay away from where you are to avoid any accidents. This is the one accessory that you can't do without.
